June 12: The Day Nigeria Chose Democracy

Once upon a time in Nigeria, there was a man named Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola. He was a successful businessman, kind-hearted, and loved by many people across the country. But MKO was more than just a rich man — he believed in fairness, justice, and giving every Nigerian a voice.

In 1993, Nigeria was ruled by the military, led by General Ibrahim Babangida. People were tired of military rule. They wanted democracy — a government chosen by the people through free and fair elections.

So, the government announced there would be a presidential election on June 12, 1993. It was the day everyone hoped would change Nigeria forever.

Many candidates wanted to become president, but MKO Abiola stood out. He traveled all over Nigeria, speaking to people in villages, towns, and cities. He promised better schools, more jobs, and peace for everyone. His campaign slogan was “Hope ‘93.”

On June 12, millions of Nigerians lined up under the hot sun to vote. For the first time, people from different tribes, religions, and regions voted together without fighting. Everyone felt hopeful that Nigeria was finally changing.

After the voting, the results started coming in. MKO Abiola was winning by a large margin. People danced in the streets, singing songs and waving posters. They were excited that Nigeria would soon have a civilian president again after years of military rule.

But then, something shocking happened. Before the final results were officially announced, General Babangida cancelled the entire election. He said there were problems with the voting process. But many people believed it was because the military didn’t want to lose power.

The news spread like wildfire. People were angry and felt betrayed. Protests broke out in many cities. Workers went on strike. Young people took to the streets, demanding that MKO be declared president.

MKO Abiola refused to give up. In 1994, he declared himself the rightful president of Nigeria. But instead of recognizing him, the military government arrested him and put him in prison. MKO spent four years behind bars, facing harsh conditions, all because he wanted democracy for Nigeria.

Sadly, MKO Abiola died in prison on July 7, 1998, under mysterious circumstances. Many Nigerians wept. To them, he was a hero who sacrificed his life for freedom and justice.

After MKO’s death, the military finally agreed to leave power. In 1999, Nigeria returned to democratic rule, and May 29 became known as Democracy Day because that’s when President Olusegun Obasanjo was sworn into office as the first civilian president of the Fourth Republic.

But many people still believed that June 12 was the true symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle. It represented the day Nigerians voted freely for a leader of their choice. It reminded everyone of MKO Abiola’s sacrifice and courage.

So in 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari decided to honor MKO Abiola and correct the injustice of the past. He declared that Nigeria’s official Democracy Day would no longer be May 29, but June 12 instead.

President Buhari also gave MKO Abiola Nigeria’s highest honor, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), usually reserved for presidents. He officially recognized MKO as the winner of the June 12, 1993, election, even though he never got to become president.

Now, every June 12, Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day to remember:

• The power of free and fair elections
• The importance of every Nigerian’s vote
• The sacrifice of MKO Abiola and many others who fought for democracy

For students and pupils, the story of June 12 teaches many lessons:

• Always stand up for what is right, even when it’s hard.
• Democracy means every person has a voice and a choice.
• Heroes sometimes make sacrifices so others can live freely.

So whenever you hear about Democracy Day on June 12, remember MKO Abiola, the man who wanted a better Nigeria for everyone. He might not have become president, but his dream helped shape the country’s future.
